So I told you that I was going to write about nudges today but let's table it to Friday. I wanted to make sure I had the opportunity to tell EVERYONE about a really exciting coalition, launched just yesterday at the National Press Club.
Founded by ProMedica and AARP Foundation, the mission of Root Cause is to address the social determinants of health, with specific emphasis on hunger as a public health issue, to improve the health status of individuals and communities.
"We’re The Root Cause Coalition and we were established to engage the healthcare community from all disciplines and provider models, public health organizations, government officials, the nutrition and food industry, and anyone dedicated to collectively developing and deploying effective solutions that will address hunger and food insecurity, and improve our nation’s health and overall well-being. Because hunger, as a national health issue, is so much bigger than just lack of food. It also encompasses insufficient access to healthy, nutritional food, which leads to higher instances of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and a host of chronic illnesses."
It's unique in that it puts hunger as a health issue front and center, and works to bring together all too common healthcare and food/nutrition silos. The idea is to tackle food insecurity by looking upstream, identifying the problem in the health care setting so that a patient can access both the services and healthy food they need to live a long, fulfilling life. It will elevate hunger as something the healthcare sector must address, from both a bottom line and public health perspective.
And there's a partnership with the CDC Foundation to conduct research, identify best practices and assess how food insecurity affects outcomes like health care costs, health claims and disease outcomes. I get to work on this, which is totally exciting.
The Coalition is looking for stakeholders interested in joining. Please visit the Root Cause Coalition site to learn more and to check out upcoming events.
